So, to preface this review I must say I am a HUGE fan of whatever the 3 main members of Pretty & Nice decide to put out. Especially, of course, Pretty & Nice, as well as Yale, Massachusetts (both names which will come up later on this blog). So it is evidently no surprise that this song is a favorite of mine.
Let me also preface this with saying I generally don't do one-song-reviews.. but this is an exception.
It has been this way since I first heard the demo, released October 6th 2023 ; Roger himself described it on his Substack as a spiritual successor to "Danger City, Population: Me", my favorite Yale MA song. He also mentions that the outro of the song is a tribute to Pretty & Nice's "Hideaway Tokyo", another favorite of mine, &, well, if there's any way to get me to listen to a song..
The full version released on the same day as me publishing this, April 5th, 2024, & let me just tell you - Roger has successfully taken a perfect song & made it MORE perfect. It is, legitimately, a masterpiece. I enjoy the execution of the themes, & the lyrics are really cool (my favorite one is "come on, mess me up, just do your worst", which also happens to be my status on Discord), & I love the guitar playing, & the vocals especially. They're so emotional & it really gets his point across well. It is very well done. Roger is an incredibly talented musician & everything he does is just knock-out fantastic, but this song really takes the cake.
WORSE gets a 10/10 from me, of course.
Since it is Bandcamp Friday today, I highly recommend throwing a few dollars his way, because it is genuinely a great song.
